Dental insurance can be a very important employee benefit, but only if the dental insurance program works for you. When trying to determine the best dentist dental insurance policy plan for you, there are many things that you need to explore. To begin with, if your employer has a dental insurance plan, is it one that is suitable for you and your family? Most employers will allow you to opt out if it isn’t or if your spouse is already covered at their place of employment.

Direct reimbursement plan:

The direct reimbursement plan means you can choose your dentist. After you’ve paid the bill, the dental insurance company will pay directly to you the amount they are prepared to refund.


The dental insurance company will also offer a Usual, Customary and Reasonable dental plan. This also allows you to choose which dentist you see. But their payments are based on an established payout percentage that does not necessarily reflect the bill you get, but a set part that they are willing to pay based on the bill or the set fee, whichever will be the lower one.



Preferred Provider Program:

Another dental plan potentially offered by dental insurance companies is the Preferred Provider Program. In this one, you are not able to choose your dentist but must pick one from a list provided to you. If you still want to use your own dentist you may find yourself ineligible for benefits.


Choose your dentist dental plan carefully. The care of your teeth should be a lifelong project that you invest in carefully. There is no second chance so, even if the plans available aren’t perfect, pick the best one available and be prepared to spend a little to keep your smile.
